HandBrake is just a GUI layer on top of FFmpeg. You can build FFmpeg with a whole range of different options, that’s up to you.

@thomasqsa Sounds like HandBrake is built wrong, then. It’s generally a bad idea to fork an upstream project as active as FFmpeg, unless you want to take it in a different direction. Which they clearly didn’t.

@GSBarlev Bruce Perens (original creator of BusyBox) has pointed out that getting such approval is not such a daunting task as it seems. The opposition of the kernel developers to GPLv3 never made much sense to me.

@ChristopherCobra If they can’t keep up with upstream changes, then that’s a “fork”.

@ChristopherCobra A lot of them are failures, yes. The ones that are not, it is mostly because upstream has gone moribund. Certainly not the case with FFmpeg!

Users don’t really matter in Open Source. What matters is community contributions. A project with millions of users can die if nobody contributes to keeping it alive. Conversely, a project with a minuscule number of users can survive and thrive, if it has a strong community around it.
