There are many levels at which you can get involved in Open Source. Coding is one thing, good documentation (including examples of use) is quite another (and often lacking). And of course there is helping out with queries from other users in online discussion forums. Right at the bottom of the chain come those who may or may not use the software, but are always ready to volunteer criticisms of why Open Source will never compete against «insert name of favourite proprietary product/company here». Things get done because people make the effort to do them, not because some armchair critic complains about them. To paraphrase JFK: “Ask not what Open Source can do for you, ask what you can do for Open Source!”

They’re not into Discord or Slack or any of those here-today-gone-tomorrow fads, if that’s what you mean.

I don’t understand the bit about the developer having control over quality-control groups. Sounds like a hint at something that happens within Meta or some other large organization.
