1:43 Not coincidentally, 2004 is the year that XFree86 made that notorious change to their licensing conditions, provoking the Xorg schism and, one might argue, actually revitalizing X11 development.

When asked why they can’t move away from Windows, people normally say “games”. Yet the Steam Deck runs Linux with a purpose-built UI, and it’s amusing to see Microsoft trying, and failing, to adapt its Windows UI to work on that form factor.

I just realized the other day, there are two ways one can pronounce “Xorg”. There is the official way, “Ecks-org”, referring to the display server software we all know and love . And then there is “Xorg” pronounced like “Zorg”, the alien planet where the mighty starship armada ... ... never mind.

2:35 I would argue that network transparency is better handled through mechanisms like VNC. Consider that X11’s idea of “network transparency” means that, if the network connection goes down, all your GUI apps get errors trying to communicate with the display server and die. Whereas with VNC, you can disconnect from a running GUI session and reconnect, and everything is still there, and didn’t even notice you were gone. That, in my view, is the proper meaning of “transparency”.
