GNOME is the one people like to use and complain about. I guess for those who are used to proprietary platforms, this makes them feel at home.

KDE was always highly customizable. That was the whole point of the ”Plasma” concept from 4.x onwards. You can choose and combine widget components to give the style of desktop you want. There is even a widget that gives you a Mac-style dock. (Try doing that on Windows.)

GNOME is easily the most resource-hungry of all the open-source GUI desktop environments.

@No-mq5lw You’re not thinking of Windows “Fisher-Price” XP, are you?

Back in my Mac days, Apple would use “d”, “a” and “b” suffixes on version numbers to denote “development”, “alpha” and “beta”. So you might see a version like “1.0d23”, which you would immediately understand as being far from finished, with not even the feature set finalized as yte. The next release, “1.0d24”, might be better. And so on.

At one time, they even tried to unify the look across KDE and GNOME, with a project called “BlueCurve”. Quite controversial at the time, as I recall.
