This just shows how fragmented the BSD world is. There are something like half a dozen BSD variants, and maybe 50 times that number of Linux distros. Yet it is easier to switch Linux distros than it is to switch BSD variants.

Linux does Mandatory Access Control, which is a non-negotiable requirement in Government-grade security.

FreeBSD are adopting the Linux Netlink API, though (RFC 3549).

Windows has a monolithic GUI tied into its OS kernel. So, no chance.

@BrodieRobertson Why, though?

@JoeBot21 Why did they feel the need to introduce gratuitous incompatibilities into their different kernels?

PipeWire also depends on systemd for process management. Without that, I think you lose some features.

@JoeBot21 You “can’t say for certain”, and then proceed to do exactly that. If the core is “more coherent and better integrated”, isn’t that the exact opposite of being fragmented among the different variants, as it is?

@economicprisoner I’ve come across incomplete man pages, but never one that said that. Could you point me to an example?
1
@economicprisoner Just a note that info is part of GNU, and Latex is, well, Latex. Neither are somehow Linux-specific. Do you get a man page for either on your favourite BSD?

@rishirajsaikia1323 What about DragonFly BSD? Seems that started from FreeBSD, but is no longer compatible with it. And this is true of all the other BSD forks. Why do they do this?

These days, BSD is copying things from Linux. Like WireGuard, for example.
