We elected her. We have a democratic system, where every vote counts equally. We are also a secular society, which doesn’t take kindly to overtly religious people trying to dictate our laws.

You know the old saying, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

She won a majority of the popular vote. Because that’s how we do things in 🇳🇿, we don’t have any of that “Electoral College” bullshit.

As somebody who lives in 🇳🇿, I can say that one of you is right, and it’s not the one trying to put someone down.

Not only did she not go to church, she was also living out of wedlock with the father of her child. And in this country, there’s nothing particularly out of the ordinary about that. Because we don’t conflate religion with morality.
4
One difference between 🇳🇿 and other countries that might be represented here is that we do not have major media owned by Rupert Murdoch (Fox News, Sky News etc). That may be a factor in why our politics has been more liberal and secular, some might say more left-leaning, than some other countries.

You need a political system which more accurately reflects the wishes of the voters, then that might happen.

@ashleighsparkle8810 It kept us from suffering American-scale rates of deaths.

Does your idea of “individual rights” include the right to subject yourself to a dangerous infectious disease? OK, fine. Does your idea of “individual rights” include the right to subject others, who didn’t make that choice, to that same dangerous infectious disease? Not so fine.

I worry a bit about which way National might go. Their leader is an admitted anti-abortionist, and he has just re-promoted a former leader who is an admitted MAGA fan.

@Buleril1 “Porous borders” ... what happened with that wall he promised, then?
2
@Scott__C They seem to be full of excuses why they got it so bad -- blame everybody but themselves, just like their Great Leader of the time. Thankfully that time is over.

“They are us.”

She is hated for being such a success with secular liberal policies. And with negotiating the treacherous shoals of COVID-19, where some much larger, more powerful, and certainly noisier, nations came a cropper.
1
@Flying_GC Yeah, we saw how the anti-abortionists in the US said they wouldn’t change the law either ... until they got in.

In the 2020 election she led Labour to the only majority victory that any party has achieved since proportional representation was brought in.
1
@TheLapper13 Comprehension trouble? Hint: we got the one you didn’t need a pound of.

@Buleril1 The key phrase is “excess deaths”. In the US, hospitals were filling up to such an extent that they had to turn parking garages into temporary emergency wards. And in Texas (one of the stalward denier states, at least in the initial stages) they had to bring in refrigerated trucks to hold all the bodies, because the morgues were overflowing. In NZ, while things did get tight, they never got that tight.
1
@Buleril1 See, that’s what I mean about “excuses”. Just like your Great Leader of the time. “It wasn’t a problem, and anyway the problem wasn’t our fault.”
1
@Buleril1 You are just admitting to poor planning. Parking garages and refrigerated trucks in one part of the country, and these notional empty wards in other parts. That’s not a good look.
