As I understand US history, the Republicans arose out of the ashes of the Whig party, which self-destructed over the slavery issue. Back when the Democrats were pro-slavery, the Republican party was founded with the idea of getting rid of it. Now I think we are seeing the Republican party itself disintegrating, over whether to go along with Donald Trump’s dictatorial tendencies or not. Maybe a new party can arise out of the ashes ...

@marcilk7534 Parties seem to be a reality of politics everywhere, there in 🇺🇸, here in 🇳🇿, just about the whole world. Groups of people banding together tend to be more powerful than individuals just trying to speak for themselves. Also good leaders can motivate people to act together to multiply their individual efforts. There is no universal agreement on the ways to solve all our common problems. The rot happens when some people put the good of their particular party ahead of the good of the country. Then your democracy is in trouble.

@marcilk7534 You are not seriously advocating that your country be run as a theocracy, though, are you? There is a reason why we have “separation of church and state”. A democracy cannot be based on religion or ethnicity: it has to look after all its citizens.
