I always saw World War II as trying to clean up the mess left by World War I. The Allies contributed to the conditions in Germany that led to the rise of Hitler. Then they turned a blind eye to his slaughtering of his own people, because he was anti-Communist. It was only when he started invading other countries that it became too much. While the US Congress was against getting involved in the new war, FDR was all in favour of it. He just had to find a way to maneouvre the country into it. He and Churchill were in regular communication about how to achieve this. If you remember, Joseph Kennedy (father of JFK, RFK et al ) was the US ambassador to the UK at the time, and he was practically a Nazi sympathizer, seeing the UK as a lost cause. Churchill and Roosevelt completely bypassed him, using a Canadian undercover agent by the name of William Stephenson (code-name “Intrepid”) as their go-between.
