  1. I don’t really understand all this nonsense. It’s long been a tradition among many European cultures to blacken their faces for ceremonial reasons, just as it’s long been a tradition among many African cultures to whiten their faces for similar reasons. And look at the range of lurid facial colourings used in traditional Chinese opera, just as a further example. In all these cases, it’s to create a contrast with their normal skin colour. Why all the fuss about this nowadays?
