  2. Remember why long shots, particularly in spaceship propulsion, are worth pursuing: it’s because space travel with rockets (as at present) is complicated, expensive, and dangerous. That was true half a century ago, it’s still true today. So if some idea, no matter how wacky, promises some short cut to the process, it’s worth at least looking at, because the cost of dismissing it out of hand, should it turn to be right, is so high.
