  3. 20:54 Yes, the light amplifiers have to be active devices. They need external power in order to amplify, after all. The pumping is just how lasers work. Remember what the “A” stands for in “LASER”? That’s right — “amplification”. And the “SE” is “Stimulated Emission”, aka “pumping”.
