They kinda are taking advantage of the situation, people were so mad about the Kavanaugh crap because they wouldn't put their foot down, instead they very much gave the democrats all the rope they needed to hang themselves, nobody appreciated just exactly what Chuck Grassley was doing lol Now that they went through the motions the Democrats look much worse than if they would've stopped the show early on. Hell you can even argue that Jeff Flake "saved" Brett Kavanaugh even though that goes against the norm.
