Bridging like you said is really the only way, proprietary isn't going to play nice if it has no reason to and it currently has no reason to, my issue is these services love being able to control communication a little too much especially Discord lately and these companies cannot be trusted with that kind of power, they've proven that much.

I don't think there ever can be one, there's Element which is Discord that we can host with our own nodes but that's not exactly practical for normals and the only other alternatives are proprietary which of course is just moving the problem. I think ultimately its finding an elegant enough way to bridge all the chat clients together because proprietary clients never want to play nice.
