  1. ​ @greggemerer8251 No point at all. Dresden was a major junction of transport routes for the German military. The use of nuclear weapons is even more so today recognised as having prevented the death of possibly a million American and Allied soldiers not to mention millions of Japanese soldiers and civilians that would have occurred if an invasion of the Japanese mainland had taken place.

  7. ​ @staleydu1 Given that Putin grew up in Leningrad (St Petersburg) in the decades following WW2, is it any wonder he has a seige mentality to the the outside world? All he would have been taught as a child was how Russians in Leningrad had to wait for their own miltary to win back territory and rescue them from the invading army with no help from other countries.

  8.  @joncumberbatch852  What minuscule time-line? Humanity is in a constant state of conflict. Name one period of human history where there wasn't a war or unrest between different groups of people. There is a constant need to adapt and overcome adversity caused by belligerence.

  9.  @joncumberbatch852  P.S. I never suggested that ALL humans are involved in conflict all the time. But, as a whole, humanity will be having conflict in multiple places around the world at any given time. It never stops.

  15. That's one of the reasons the Germans made such huge initial gains in Barbarossa. No decent leadership on the Russian side and the commanders they had were afraid to make decisions on the front-line for fear of summary execution.

  29.  @alsm974  The Katyn massacre was just a continuation of Stalin's policies that were behind the purges of the Soviet military before the start of WW2. Even at the end of WW2 Stalin still had this mindset, suggesting that 50'000 to 100'000 German officers should be executed.

  30. You really have your facts ass-about. Stalin was actually warned repeatedly of the Germans massing troops and equipment on the borders but dismissed the reports. Hitler was always going to invade Russia for idealogical reasons and so-called "Lebensraum". Nothing to do with a pre-emptive strike.

It was interesting quite a few years ago that the British Prime Minister (I can't remember which one) ruled that some WW2 documents due to be declassified not to be declassified until 2045. I hope I am still alive then to find out what's been kept from the public. There must be thousands of events that happened that we will never know the truth about from that conflict.

  37. There is no moral equivalency. The manner in which these acts were carried out and the justification for doing so is not comparable. ie: The Holocaust vs Terror Bombing. Not even on the same page.

  44.  @joncumberbatch852  Where I live we have never had a civil war (that's an oxymoron if ever there was) but my country has regularly been involved in the conflicts of other countries. Every human society that has ever existed is a construct. I'm not in any way condoning genocide or Nazi ideology, but it cannot be argued that the principles behind Germany's T-4 program (practices from which were applied in the subsequent perpetration of the Holocaust) were based upon sound scientific knowledge in regards to genetic selection in a population. That being, if a particular genetic trait is considered undesirable, it can be prevented from being passed on to subsequent generations, if not totally eliminated. This is applicable to not just humans but all living things plants, insects, birds, fish, mammals etc.
