  1. As if surface ice has any effect on magma plumes rising and erupting through the earth's crust. In 2010, when the Eyjafjallajökul volcano erupted, scientists were predicting it would take days to melt the covering ice. It got through it in a few hours. Ice has no significant effect on whether or not a volcano erupts.
