  1. So there's dark humor in the operating room. Not really news. Doctors are under pressure doing these surgeries every day. If a doctor right after a surgery went on CNN and said nasty things about you, that's another story. People say nasty things about me, you, and everybody, when they don't think we can hear. Nothing new about that.

  5. The airline wouldn't let him "upgrade" to first class, because he didn't pay for first class or wasn't eligible to upgrade. That's nothing new. The flight attendants were following the rules they're trained on. Passengers can't just get up and take empty seats where they see one. I've seen that before on planes between classes with empty seats (economy/economy plus/business/first class, etc.). The airline was obviously repositioning the plane. They needed the plane in Orlando for a flight full of passengers back to London.

  10. I wonder where he's at now. The guy made a mistake. He learned the hard way, that if you have issues with a company, contact the corporate office. Don't take it out on a front-line employee, who is only trying to do their job, make some money, and has nothing to do with what goes on in the executive offices.

I'm sinking, I'm sinking!" as the poor guy or gal who stepped in it slowly sinks and disappears, never to be seen again, unless a hero nearby rescues them before it's too late. There's an old Gilligan's Island episode where the Skipper got stuck in the stuff while Gilligan desperately tried to help. The Skipper managed to get out. It must have been self-cleaning quicksand, because right after he got out his dirty and wet clothes became clean and dry. :/

  13. Is it legal for a homeowner renting out to videotape their guests, even if they were trashing the place? I mean, most guests are honest and I don't think they would be happy if they found out videos of them walking around nude were made. If a hotel did that, they would be sued in one minute.

  14. I don't know about this, but I like how Dollar Tree proudly says they've spent $1,500,000 "upgrading and repairing stores." A quick Google search tells me there are 8,138 Dollar Tree stores, so that's an average of $184 spent on each store. Maybe buying new mops and buckets for each store was this investment, because you can't buy much more for $184. I've been in these dollar stores, but don't shop at them. I don't see the attraction. You get what you pay for. Things are cheap because the things are cheap. Stuff is no longer a dollar either. The items still at a dollar or less have shrunk in size. Where you used to get a bag of peanuts for one dollar, it's now one dollar a peanut. What's the point?

  17. I felt Dr. Oz lost with that incredible statement that abortion decisions should be decided by the patient, her doctor(s) and local political leaders. Who else should be in the room? I don't know if he truly believed that, but it was really a dumb comment he made in trying to please the anti-abortion wing of the GOP. People remember that stuff when they head for the polls.

  22. Didn't the Japanese mission fail because it ended up on its side? Without anybody there to push the thing straight up, it probably can't do much. If Apollo landed on its side, the astronauts would have been doomed. If your car was on its side, you couldn't drive it. These images of the lander aren't from the lander but from a spacecraft above. I just see a fuzzy black dot. I wouldn't call that a success.

  23. It's whatever works for someone, whether it's a trade or being an accountant. There's nothing wrong with being a plumber or construction (the world needs them both) but both are physically demanding and are generally a younger person's job. Once a person can't do that job for whatever reason, what is plan B?

  24. Even if they could drain the ocean, I doubt it will be found. It's too large an area, and deep too. It's like someone saying I lost a quarter and can you help me find it. You ask where they think they lost it, and they say Los Angeles County. At this point, I don't think the black boxes are of use. Too much time underwater at very deep ocean pressures.

  26. This isn't new be a long shot. Few cards no longer have a chip, so the magnetic strip reader shouldn't be used (it shouldn't work if your card has a chip). Better yet, use contactless when available. I don't think the bad guys have advanced to that. Whenever I'm at a gas pump I look for contactless. Tapping is safer than inserting your card into a reader.

I'll tell you one thing, I was a victim of a mistake in an operating room, that I have to live with everyday of my life. Something like that I care about. As far as staff saying something I don't like when I'm under anesthesia, I absolutely don't care. If the outcome is good, that's all I care about. I wonder the motive of the person(s) publicizing this. If they were injured, that's one thing, but people say things behind your back, it happens all the time. That will never change.

Are they really players? They're just sitting at a slot machine that's still functioning with their slot club card inserted, hoping they're the next winner.

  31. When they're two big winners at the same store on the same draw, it doesn't mean that place is a double-lucky place. It more than likely means someone bet their winning ticket more than once. That happened in the L.A. area too. There were two big winners at the same gas station. Did it amount to more? Nope. The two winning tickets just divided the jackpot in two.

  34. I've read the $5 meal might be something like a double cheeseburger, fries and a soft drink. How much difference is that from buying the items separately? In-N-Out in my part of the world (Calif.) has the meal menu (1, 2, or 3). They're the same price as if bought separately. The #2 (cheeseburger, fries and drink), is about $8.75 (plus tax) in L.A. It's their equivalent to a Big Mac Meal. It went up about 15 cents when the $20 minimum wage started. No biggie. It's not some big catastrophe that political commentators were barfing about.

  36. Not really. He didn't pay for business class and/or wasn't eligible to upgrade. He only paid for economy, so he gets to sit there. If the airline started letting passengers move about the cabin, taking empty seats in a better class, it can cause issues. Passengers will start to think they can always do this, and they'll start fighting with flight attendants about why "so and so got to do it, why can't I?" It's not something the airlines want. So passengers get to sit in the class they paid for. If there was some sort of emergency or safety issue on the plane that required you move to business, or the flight attendant allowed you to trade a seat with someone in business (this does happen), then maybe, otherwise you sit in the class you paid for.

  38. I tell people all technology eventually becomes obsolete. Eventually iPhones and Androids will no longer work. One day, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, etc., will be gone. It will happen, but I don't know when.

  39. I have to disagree. If you're alone in your own home, do you make it a point to not be fully dressed only in the private areas (bedroom, bathroom, etc.)? We're getting personal, but I don't. If I rented an AirBnB place just for myself, I might do the same thing. If the owner presented me with a notice that you must be properly dressed in the "public areas," like the kitchen or living room, because he may be video taping me, I would say screw-that, go stay in a hotel, then report him to AirBnB.

  40. Some group of people had to have rolled that out there and drilled into the rock. Stuff like the pyramids and Stonehenge humans managed to construct thousands of years ago with some ingenuity, contrary to what you might hear about space aliens. This thing, in comparison, looks like a piece of cake to construct. If they inspect what it is made of very carefully, they could be able to identify the source of the metal.

  48. A lot of Monday morning quarterbacking here. It looks like the initial fire started at about 11:00 pm the night before, was declared controlled the next morning but then got out of hand that afternoon as the winds really picked up. I doubt any residents that morning who knew about the early fire thought they should pack up and leave. As far as blaming the electric company, does any power company turn off the power when the winds pick up? Is there a wind speed where the power gets shut off? 30 mph, 60 mph, or more? I've watched many hurricane news reports on TV and don't see the power intentionally turned off, but it failing as things get damaged. I live in a wind-prone area of Southern California, and if the electric company turned off the power every time the winds picked up, my power would be turned off dozens of times a year. Customers sure would complain if that was the electric company's policy.

  49. It did handle the incident. A big bird hitting the surface of a plane that is going at a large speed will damage it, but won't bring it down. A big bird getting into an engine will damage it too, but won't bring it down. If you want the plane to be 100% indestructible, that's not going to happen.

  50. I don't know. If there was a Northridge type earthquake in New York City, I wouldn't want to be there. Modern buildings may survive, but most buildings are old. Unreinforced brick, homes and apartments not property bolted to the foundations, and the like, will just fall with people inside them. California has learned lessons over the decades. New buildings are quite tough, while older buildings have been retrofitted. The same with infrastructure. Highways, bridges, tunnels, etc., have had things seismically strengthened. I can't say that about the east coast.
