The population wouldn't be big enough to employ enough operators. Now, I don't even want to answer the phone. Most calls are robocalls or telemarketers. If someone wants to communicate with me, send me a text, email or social media post. Not only have operators become obsolete, the telephone call itself might become obsolete.
