  2.  @sugarnads  The Spanish "owned" Mexico for more than 400 years yet almost 400k "mayan" people of the Yucatan still don't speak it. Often a language becomes universal within an area of diverse languages. For example mandarin,or more accurately now Beijing Guo, standard Chinese,is the universal language of China. This doesn't mean every Chinese can use it,nor is necessarily proficient in it.
