I think the example there the tip of the shoe was on the offside is a great example that the only sensible option is to have this clear definition of the rules. As a result, the ruling was definitely correct that the player was offside. If you create any other rule such as "more than 5% of the player offside is a foul", then you can find some example where the player was 5.01% offside and you would have the same discussion about the rule. If you don't want clear definition, then you would have to use some kind of random number generator to randomize the line and I think it would be much worse for the players. It might be more entertaining to the viewers, though. I guess it all boils down to "why do we have professional sports at all"? If you think it's mostly entertainment, then the correct solution is to have some randomness in the system. If it's about finding the most competent athletes, then you want clear boundaries.
