  1. AMD GPUs still need binary blobs to be loaded to the card during startup and if you try to use too recent AMD GPU in your system, you may need to hunt for the binary blobs even though the kernel were recent enough. If you wait a month or two after release of a new card, then the binary blobs should be automatically available. If I've understood correctly, those binary blobs are execute by the GPU internally and the only reason OS must submit those after every boot is to allow AMD to have less flash installed on the cards.
