6:00 If you start throwing away bits from color information, always keep most bits for green because human eye is the most sensitive to lightness levels of green color. Always sacrifice blue color bits first, then red and only finally green.

@DarkShroom I think evolution optimized for green because it's the middle wavelength in the visible spectrum. As different wavelengths focus at different distances within the eye, it makes sense to focus the middle wavelength correctly and allow reds and blues to be slightly out of focus (meaning less resolution for those colors). Cameras can use multiple lens elements with different index of refraction to nearly focus all wavelengths but biological eyeball mk1 is not that good.

@AaronGiffordOfficial Good point. I checked the original Doom color palette and it indeed has only 16 green colors. 4 bits are enough to losslessly represent those.
