Why didn't they make the block fully open deck design – that is, put the cylinders maybe 5–10 mm further apart and have identical wall thickness on all sides and better change to have head gasket working + no differences in wall thickness of the cylinder which should result in less changes in thermal expansion.

Where does the carbon come that causes intake valves to be totally messed up? Is the PCV valve setup causing a lot of oil fumes or does this thing have way too aggressive EGR setup?

Stupid design examples I can immediately see: 3:35 Non-keyed wheel (not a huge problem because this doesn't run a belt with teeth so it cannot be really timed anyway). 4:44 Waterpump housing that is not run with the timing belt but requires timing belt removal to be replaced. WTF? 5:20 Crank shaft timing belt wheel has no key. WTF?!? 8:30 Ridiculously narrow area to separate water from the cylinder. It's no wonder the head gasket is failing on this engines. The only way no key in any of the wheels make any sense is that the timing is done by locking all shafts with some special tool while all the wheels are lose and the wheels are tightened in place while the locks are in place. Some VW TDI engines have this setup for valve cams. You can still do DIY timing belt replacement by never releasing the nuts from any of the timing wheels and simply count the same amount of teeth between the wheels. However, if you ever need to detach any of the wheels, you have to do full engine timing with the special tools.

It's a small wonder that the oil pump didn't fail with that much sludge in the oil. The owner definitely skipped a lot of oil changes with this engine.
