  1. I think KDE is not used by default in distros because KDE 4 was so bad that distros stopped to even looking at that direction. The KDE has been a bit fragile in my experience - some of the invisible background processes seem to hang or crash too often and all the frontend apps end up more or less borken. If KDE gets their quality a bit better, I'll probably start using it for my daily driver.

  2. The year of Linux desktop happens when ChromeOS gets popular enough. I'm still using MATE desktop which is basically continuation of Gnome 2.x and I might use modern Xfce as an alternative. Cinnamon is pretty okay, too, but it seems to eat a lot of RAM when you have 60+ windows open on your desktop. For me personally, the worst part of Gnome 3.x is CSD (client side decorations) which messes with all the features that I like in my window manager. None of the CSD windows have any of the features I want from my window manager.
