The argument that gender is the optimal way to categorize athletes because that was the traditional way to do that is obviously a very weak argument. It was an easy to understand concept but it logically said that having gender value of woman was basically a disabled series and you had to be careful who are allowed to compete in that series. Surely we can create better metrics based on actual statistics. Basically you would want a metric that most accurately predicts the performance of the athlete. I think if you only know the gender of any random athlete, that's pretty poor data to predict his or her performance.
