  1. TL;DR: Official sets are so expensive because they are still hand made. A multiaxis CNC machine could cut all those pieces perfectly much faster.

  4. Here in Finland people recycle e.g. plastic bottles very well because you have to pay for the bottle and you get the money back when you recycle the bottle with the cap to recycling. The recycling rates improve every time the mandatory minimum cost for the bottle is increased so this obviously works. Make all plastic packages more expensive to throw to trash and it will be no longer thrown to trash. Another way to solve the problem is to make it more expensive to use new plastic via taxation. Then it makes more monetary sense to increase recycling rates. As usual, follow the money. Right now pushing used plastic ocean in Asia is the cheapest method so it will win all the alternative solutions.
