Something like that should definitely be counted as design mistake and fixed/replaced by the factory if not documented in the user documentation. However, if the manufacturer documented the usable temperature range and maximum allowed change speed for the temperature and you exceeded either of those, it's your fault. If you look at the actual requirements for temperature, air humidity etc. very rare consumer devices are actually usable here in Finland where winters can get really cold. Basically you're on our own during winter time if you have to carry your devices with you during the winter.

@ts757arse "Reasonable lifetime" is also highly debatable thing. At least here in Finland where the consumer protection laws are pretty good the lifetime argument often turns out very surprising. The rulings do not match the actual expected lifetimes of things at all – I assume they use a couple of dices to decide the expected lifetime for each case here. If I could decide, all manufacturers would need to clearly define expected lifetime of their products and if they fail to support at least security updates for the whole lifetime, you can return the product for full refund during the announced lifetime. That would get two things: no more unsupported IoT crap and consumers with clear understanding if the crap they're buying can actually be used for the lifetime they need.

@ts757arse I'm also using things I own a lot longer than people usually do. The computer I'm using has most parts from 2009 or 2012. I've only replaced SSD and HDDs. My car is year 1999 model that I maintain by myself and I've bought my last new phone around 2009. The problem with Apple devices is that they never ever promise any support at all. Try looking on their documentation or web pages. Show me EOL dates for any products! Many iPads and iPhones are supported as long as they have enough RAM to run the latest OS but you cannot find the RAM the new devices include either.
