There's an old joke about Windows device driver system. It goes like this: "Masochist: a windows driver developer with a smile" There's a reason printing is so broken especially on Windows.

@chrism6952 Apple didn't write CUPS. It was written for POSIX compatible UNIXes in 1997–1999 and Apple adopted the project as the foundation of the printing system in MacOS X in 2002. Because CUPS had Apache 2.0 license, Apple had no option but to keep using it. Since then, Apple has made improvements to it and those improvements have been published according to Apache license. If CUPS were Apple project from the start, you could be sure that it wouldn't be open source.

@katrinabryce Nothing is compatible with GPL 2 except licenses that allow transmutating the other license into GPL 2. This is by design because GNU ideology is that all software should be distributed with GPL 2 or GPL 3. And note that plain old GPL 2 license is not compatible with GPL 3 either!

@katrinabryce Yes, because BSD/MIT license is free enough to allow adding extra restrictions to make it GPL.

How recently you mean? I think last one was published in 2021. But yes, major vulnerability seems be found every couple of years so I'm expecting new one to be found this year or next year. It's not like the drivers are so high quality it would give any hope otherwise.

Maybe you should run a Raspberry Pi controlling the printer and make it show up to Windows as network IPP printer only? That way windows couldn't overwrite its settings randomly.
