I think the only remotely reasonable explanation for this situation would have been if the wording for the item made it possible to think that the seller was official Nikon retailer. In that case, the trademark legislation here in Europe basically requires you to defend your trademark (this case Nikon Europe being forced to defend their trademark). And if eBay is allowing this kind of power for rights other than trademark, then this doesn't make any sense at all.
