@rossmanngroup Internet would be much better off with low cost paid content. Like $0.001 per page view or per minute. However, in practice we have such a lousy payment systems that the overhead per transaction is in ballpark of $0.10 when handled by the credit card companies. To make practical overhead lower than 50%, you have to round anything less than 200 pages or minutes to zero. The correct way to fix this is to reduce overhead per transaction to $0.0005 or less and suddenly non-ad-revenue systems start to make a lot of sense. However, I have no idea how to do that in practice. Any proof-of-work based blockchain is going to be way too expensive to use, any credit card company interaction in the system is going to make it way to expensive. Even proof of stake Ethereum has transaction costs in $0.35 per transction class which is about 700x more expensive than we would actually need for acceptable minimum efficiency solution. In reality you would want to have much less overhead than "only" 700x better than Ethereum or 200x better than credit card companies. For single site solutions such as YouTube there could be acceptable solutions but a single offer of $10/month no matter if you actually watch 5 minutes or 100 hours doesn't cut it. And even then it wouldn't cut for the internet at large.
