Lesson of the story: always take and store the receipt whenever you're even close to New York.

@BladeOfLight16 The problem is that the original problem that the government bureaucracy was supposed to solve has been forgotten long time ago and nobody knows if the current practices has anything to do with the original problem that was trying to be solved.

@myopinion69420 I think the North Pole would be a good default for any uninitialized location in software. That should be as close as human readable null address you can get.

@MPnoir That's numerically better null value but I don't think that would appear logically null similar to North Pole to non-programmers.

@BladeOfLight16 It's indeed a hard problem to solve how to effectively run a government. I live in Finland and even though things appear pretty good overall (Finland is statistically the happiest country in the world) the spending on goverment byreocracy is really high. According to one recent estimate, the total money spent on byreocracy is actually slightly above the money spent on education. And you have to remember that education is free for all citizens in Finland, including university studies and post-grad studies!

@BladeOfLight16 The hard part is to actually implement the change you are suggesting. Unless you're talking about civil war or similar quick path, you have to implement the change within the rules of current legislation and that's the hard part because the current legislation has built-in balance heavily tilted towards continuing the current state as-is.

26:40 Asking for social security number for verification is a stupid thing that happens all around the world. It happens here in Finland, too! The social security number is supposed to be identification data, similar to register plates in your car. Would you consider it okay that somebody is verified as the owner of the car if they know the register plate? Why would you consider same type of information to verify identity of a human??

The fact that the state-of-art communication with government is still a fax machine in year 2023 baffles me.

23:30 It only took hours of phone calls to find one competent individual!

This whole story seems like a real world version of this fragment of old Asterix animation: https://youtu.be/vsotCuGVi6k?t=2471

My theory is that they put a warrant on you because they couldn't contact you via the PO box. /s
