As long as you don't have turbo which constantly changes the optimal efficiency depending on actual turbo rpm the CVT control should be pretty simple software-wise. And most turbos don't have a method to directly monitor the rpm so you have to figure out the turbo rpm from the other behavior of the engine, mostly current engine rpm, egr valve configuration and air mass meter and just hope there're no turbo leaks or a jam in the egr valve.
