  1. I wish you would have included something about what the TEST button actually does in most fire detectors. Is it just battery voltage tester or does it actually excersize the circuits needed for detection?

I've heard explanation at local fire department that ionizing detectors are better at detecting open flame and optical sensors are better at detecting smoke from things that are about to catch fire. Sometimes the open flame produces very little visible smoke and as a result, you should have both detector types in your home. The recommendation they told us was that one should use ionizing detector in hallways or other locations required for exiting the apartment or house in case of fire and optical detectors in bedrooms.
