  3. super super cool. I've been vaguely pondering this for a while. Not sure I'll actually ever do it, but I'm glad you've had success doing so, and that there's a community of folks doing it. Certainly if some old chromebooks fall into my lap somehow, I'll very much consider it.

[At some risk of sounding like one of the "what does this do over dd?" bros; hopefully I won't by the end...] While at least most of my current needs are something where I am happy to use the familiar-to-me dd to get things done, I'm grateful to you for creating this, so that I (and others!) can know about other options that are out there, that may fit others' needs and/or my own future needs (some even anticipated currently!) better. Curious how (if) it actually works. I guess I’ll have to poke around on a system that has it, and see what the deal is. Fascinating.

  8. You're awesome, too, Veronica! And how did I not know about this command all these years? Hmm, maybe it wasn't available on the SVR4-based systems I cut my teeth on? Still, surprised I didn't pick up on it somewhere along the lines. I knew about (though don't ever knowingly use) col, but that's VERY different.

  9. Nice intro to find! And hey, I learned something. As an old-school UNIX person, I learned find on a non-GNU version, and I don't think I had the "-exec ... +" option... only "-exec ... ;"... Hmm, but then... somewhere along the way, I discovered -print0, and tended to use it with xargs -0. I wonder if that pre-dates the exec+ mode?? Because somehow I didn't know about that, and... could easily imagine using that in favor of the xargs version (I very rarely want the -exec; version)... so, thanks for teaching this old dog a new trick! :D

  12. Hmm, I guess I'm late to this video, but glad to have had it served up. Yes, I remember Wyse terminals from my public library (ref 2:09), but also in some of the server rooms at SGI. All amber, I think... the white is kinda nice, though! Meanwhile, at one point, a coworker and I went down a long path of exploring the "Yost Serial Device Wiring Standard" (cool thing!), which I think we thought there were flaws in, though I think we might have been wrong, and anyway, getting that going at that workplace (and my home labs, since). Fun stuff.

  14.  @dingokidneys  well, most of my uses for dd have nothing to do with a dying drive... and typing a command when I know its options/argument structure/whatever is a whole lot quicker than navigating a set of menus, even if I know them, too. If I have to start looking up options, then that changes things, of course... but you'll also note that I was giving emphasis to my use cases, and at the current time, so... yeah. Different problems, different tools. I'm glad to add this tool to my to-try list.

I admit, my curiosity is a bit piqued by the idea of a messiah (sp?) cartridge video... though at the same time, I have no anticipation of ever having a C64, let alone the cartridge, so... I guess it'd just be for edutainment, but then, you've been known to embrace that framing, so... sure, why not? ;) [Low pressure, though. I won't miss it if it's not there, but I'll enjoy it if it is.]

I know I'm looking forward to it. :) Also, as someone who's always loved being behind the scenes, and in ways still does, I can also super relate to this. I love explaining tech to folks... which I mostly do 1:1, though I sometimes imagine doing YouTube videos sometime... except, I kinda want to be behind the scenes for that. So, let me know if you ever need a "stage hand" on something. :) (script reviews? Or... well, I don't expect you to take me up on this; if you do, we'll figure it out.)
