The key is prevention rather than critical care, the data out of many countries show out of all severe and critical cases who needs ventilation half will die, it is the early detection and treatment that will make a difference but the UK still does not offer mass community testing and people still not wearing masks so concentrating on production of ventilators will not save more lives as long as the spread continues.
