SCMP never seems to dispoint with its anti China undertone, the frame of this opening statement is completely wrong, plus in 2004, China was not (still is not) in competition with any country on high-speed rail, it was a relatively poor country just started to develop/industrialise, it planned to upgrade its rail infrastructure. What rival/competitor is SCMP talking about?

  27. Sorry Tsai, you forgot your country is called (the Republic of) China, its territory includes Mainland China as written in your constitution. You claim to want to protect the sovereignty of Republic of China, yet blatantly violate the sovereignty of China by meeting a US official without permission of your central government. Who do you think you are fooling? Over 90% of the countries in the world recognise there is only ONE China, People's republic of China's government is the ONLY legitimate representative of the ONE China.

In fact, ROC ceased to exist in 1949 when the CPC (The Communist Part of China) led PRC was founded after it defeated the KMT (The Chinese Nationalist Party) forces in the Chinese civil war.
