The plan to let 80% UK population get infected is total madness, the herd immunity is not proven to work and it is just too risky because it will certainly kill many old and sick but also some of the young and strong as we have seen to be the case in China and Italy, the idea to use British people as part of this ''experiment'' is just inhumane and insane, I guess when these psychopaths politicians put money ahead of people's lives this is nothing surprising as they have always been doing, what a shame!

@Knoxode5 Fatality is only 3%? This is 30 times of the death rate of flu. It is 15% for over 80s, 8% over 70s, 3.6% over 60s and this is China's figure bearing in mind that very strict quarantine measures had been taken from early on in a 11 million city, so if the spread was left uncontrolled the death rate would have increased by many folds as the healthcare system would just not cope. Italy's death rate is much higher about 6% at the moment, and that is when Italy is supposed to have the second best healthcare system in the world. NHS has half of ICU capacity of Italy and any Brits will know that it barely even function well on a Friday night, let alone if it has to face what Italy is facing now. Problem is the herd immunity for this virus is not yet proven, no solid study has been done about the effect of antibodies, how long it last and so on. The right way to get herd immunity is through vaccine which will take at least a year from now. So yes this plan is a crazy experiment a gamble with people's lives.

@Knoxode5 There is also a severe and critical case rate of 20%, yes 20% need oxygen support and ventilators and out of those 50% die! This is what is happening in Italy right now and also what happened in China! Many people also spend more than a month in hospital needing various medical support, and many mild cases turn to critical cases rapidly during the second week as disease progress so needing medical support as well, so a lot of hospital beds required, NHS WILL NOT COPE, end of!

Masks are proven to slow and reduce the spread, countries where everyone wears masks have much less infections and deaths, it protect other people as well as oneself, it is just science and common sense, nothing to do with politics or culture, why making so many excuses.

@AlexanderJames-gn5lb Yep, Britain's current plan saves neither life nor economy, this slow killing both is not a successful way out, you are completely right! Since the global economy is already suffering huge loss at least we have a chance to save lives as we need people to be well and alive to build the economy back, this given up cold blooded attitude of UK now is just shockingly unacceptable. You are totally correct it is not time to moan about inconveniences however disruptive to people's personal lives it is time to do the right thing it is not that difficult actually, if you look at China, 2, 3 months of staying at home, and saves millions of lives and it can be done!

@evelghostrider Medical professionals wear masks to protect patients from what? Bacteria or viruses of course. It is obvious that masks are effective to prevent germs and viruses from escaping one's mouth and nose, otherwise doctors would not bother. A well fitted N95 mask will filter out up to 95% bacteria and virus, doctors wear them when treating Covid patients, both to protect the patients and themselves. That's why it is most effective when everyone wears masks, especially when it is known that Covid-19 can be transmitted asymptomatically or pre-symptomatically. Several scientific researches have shown there is a clear reduction on rate of transmission when masks are worn, in countries where masks are worn by most people, there is a decrease of infections as much as 40%. BTW, wastes from Covid patients should be disposed and destroyed separately from other wastes which I believe is the practice in most countries. With latest evidence that Covid 19 could be transmitted by aerosolization, it gives even stronger reason to wear a mask, preferably a well fitted N95 masks if one care about protecting oneself and others.

@evelghostrider I guess as long as people like you can make sure never to come close, within 2 meters to anyone else, especially in an indoor environment, then wearing a mask or not is your choice, this is of course to protect others assuming you may be infected and contagious. However, don't dismiss the effectiveness of masks just because you decided not to wear it, you are mixing up two things, one is straightforward science and the other is your interpretation of freedom. The main method of transmission is still through large droplets, The virus can only live on surfaces for certain amount of time and with most household disinfectants, it will be killed instantly, but once it gets into your mucus membrane it will thrive and causing damage, so to reduce the chance of this happening, put a protective barrier against it, it is simple logic. This virus IS deadly, to some, the key is to prevent vulnerable people from getting them, everyone ''healthy'' need to do their part, but I am sure you can 200% guarantee you will not go anywhere near an old or immune compromised individual or is it as you stated, you just concern about yourself not others. When you exercise your freedom to harm intentionally or unintentionally others, then that is not called freedom, we all have a duty to take responsibility for ourselves I am sure you would agree.

@evelghostrider I fully understand your reason for not wanting to wear a mask but yet do not agree it is the right thing to do at this special time. Masks do not work 100% nor do vaccines, I have never claimed this to be the case. The right way to achieve herd immunity (protecting the vulnerable mainly) is actually by vaccinating at least 60% population, otherwise it won't work, do you think people like you by refusing vaccination therefore potentially jeopardising the protective effects is responsible? This is the same for mask wearing. This is why I talked about personal responsibility, our freedom is not freedom when it negatively affects others I believe. This is selfishness nothing more. I am from a country where people believe putting collective interests ahead of personal interests under certain situation and sacrificing certain individual freedom for the greater good, you don't have to agree with this culture but during this pandemic, this attitude worked very well to help contain the virus. It seems you make a big deal about mask wearing but no one is trying to take your personal choice for good only asking you to do something special at a special time, that is all.

@evelghostrider This virus is not that deadly, I agree, but if we let it spread rampant among the population, there will be many many deaths, any death is one too much, especially if the person is your loved one. Do many people get ill and die from any other diseases or other causes everyday, of course, does that mean we should let this virus affect people, make people suffer and die without any action taken? Of course not. What about the medical people who risk their lives to save the ill, hundreds of them have already died, this is far from ideal, is it? ONS has been publishing data clearly showing a much higher excess of deaths comparing to the average of past 10 years, not sure about your research being correct. And right now the figure must have gone back to almost normal after 4 months of lock down. The government is not your enemy entirely, it measures up medical advice and national economic interests to provide advice accordingly, the polices are not going to please everyone, but I believe it is most of time for the interests of the majority. If you don't want to be controlled, just look at the US right now, total lack of leadership and the pandemic is clearly out of control, hence 135,000 deaths so far and more to come. It would have taken tremendous effort for this figure to be faked don't you think? I believe many deaths could have been prevented if only their leader took it seriously at the start. If you still think this virus is not serious then I have no more to say. I guess you would say it is your choice to get sick and die, yes indeed it is, with all due respect.

People who don't want to wear masks, try Covid-19 see if you like it, go on don't wait, you get at least a few months immunity so no need to wear masks for all that time, it is a really good deal!

@Flamingo9653 Yes you are missing a lot, it was reported in the US media, the rallies contributed to some of the new spikes. And maybe most of the BLM protesters quarantined themselves after it, hence no spike, but then again you have no data to prove that there weren't any spreads after that, we simply don't know. So your examples don't prove anything on the usefulness of masks.
