Russian has many loanwords from Latin, Greek, French, German and English. And of course, a close linguistic relationship exists too, because it is Indo-European. You can test it by reading Pushkin. Most of loanwords came to Russian since 1850. Pushkin usually used native Russian words, except names.

I think there are pairs Epsilon - Heta and Ypsilon - Iota. However, shifts of sound were different.

It is very probably because the letter "heta" is the ancestor of russian letter "И" which sounds [i], and "epsilon" is the ancestor of russian letter "Е" which sounds (after consonants) between [e] and [ɛ].

@OldLordSpeedy We in Russian call camel "верблюд" /verblüd/. The first letter is not С or K or G, it is В which sounds like V. The letter which is derivative from "Gamal" is Г.
