  1. Don't want to poison the well, but John Mersheimer is infamous for taking the sides of questionable regimes against the West. Iran, PRC, you name it – whether the "West" is the US, Israel, Taiwan, Ukraine or anyone else, he takes the opposite side. He has very little serious credibility. As for serious arguments in favor of Russia's actions: some of them have some merit, but at the end of the day, the invasion was unprovoked. There was no smoking gun, even according to Russia itself, let alone objective observers. Even if someone looks at it from a strictly realpolitik perspective, invading another country without a smoking gun is a bad precedent for everyone.
