Yeah this to me was like hearing that Americans don't have adjustable temperature on their radiators (or thermostats etc.) - it's such a basic feature of the modern home. My only memory of stove-top kettles is at my grandparents house as a child, bearing in mind they were born in the first decade of the 1900s and only upgraded in the mid 90s. Well then there was that time I woke up at a friend's relative's place after a heavy night's clubbing and though it was quaint that they had a stove-top kettle, only to realise that it was an electric kettle made in the old fashioned aesthetic when I smelled burning rubber... I often boil just enough water for one or two cups and it feels like it takes about one minute, it's a modern convenience I'd assumed was universal for anywhere with electricity.
