Ethiopia and Russia went from monarchy to socialism for example, while democratic Athens was a geopolitical player for centuries before it's democracy was ended by the Macedonians. The US was a republic with free elections before Marxism was even a thing. It's not like Socialism naturally spawns from political systems. The line Democracy -> Socialism is not as clear or straight as you like to depict.
