Moral of the story? The US is forever fucked. There's more guns than citizens. It wouldn't matter if guns were banned tomorrow. Many Americans' solution to more gun violence is to, of course, go out and buy a gun! Or a better gun. Or more guns, with bigger clips. Shit, they better get a silencer too...sure wouldn't want to hurt their ears in those gunfights in the street!...:/...I'm sad for America.

Nope. They were also referring to a "regulated militia", whatever that is in 2017. Unfortunately, logical interpretation and/or perspective on the Constitution's 2nd Amendment is clearly lacking in the US. Many appear unwilling to accept the intention of words written in the 1700s needs updating.

18:52...Oliver's suggestion to put Confederate statues in museums is a good idea. I recommend they all go to a place where they're sure to be accepted....the "Creation Museum" in Kentucky. Those who rationalize our brutal past will be at home in a place celebrating ignorance. A place where delusional parents still take their children to further brainwash them that humans were 'created'... and every human's ancestry can be traced to 'Adam and Eve'. They've even got Adam and Eve walking with dinosaurs. As Oliver would say, you can't make this shit up.

bwe123....another key reason for some wanting to remember the confederacy...religion. The majority of those living in the Southern states still believe in a "god"... and that all humans are descended from the fictional (and very white) characters known as Adam and Eve. Such delusional beliefs allow them to rationalize hate of anyone who isn't white. It doesn't help the Bible says slavery is Ok. It's similar to some Muslims hating whites and rationalizing murder of anyone who doesn't believe in their fictional (and very brown) characters.

It's always disappointing when Oliver generalizes and cherry-picks incidents to try to make a point. Like other politically- biased late night hosts, he uses whatever bit of 'news' helps sell his bias or make a joke. Context, balance and perspective are lacking in this segment. For example, Oliver mentions two stories of violence against deportees in this vid. But offers zero proof the deportations were the reason for the violence. How do we know the two stories are true? We don't. Oliver's biggest lie-by-omission was not mentioning the thousands of examples of where the court system works. And successful deportations of criminals and those clearly abusing the system. Or the deportations of undocumented "refugees" who can't genuinely prove their life is in danger in their home country. Oliver also fails to mention many of the current issues are due to weak border security/vetting processes. Even though Obama was 'deporter in chief' and sent millions back, many of the current issues can be traced back to his 8 year term. Oliver propagandizes this segment by suggesting the current problems are because of the current government. The long term solutions to the immigration issue and the under-staffed/backlogged court system are simple: 1. Don't let illegal immigrants enter the country in the first place! 2. Speed up the vetting process for claiming 'refugee' status. Get those who don't meet humanitarian criteria out of the country ASAP. The longer they're here, the more complicated their situation becomes.

Perhaps the loophole is misunderstood. It's moot anyway. The Vegas psycho sure didn't need any loopholes to acquire dozens of guns.

And if you look at a chart of the amount of unicycles in the US, compared to unicycle related deaths, the number of unicycles goes up while deaths go down. Sorry for the sarcasm, but your logic is flawed. But thank you for helping validate my opinion, intentional or not.

Julie, yes I read that comment. It was appreciated. GamRamJam's insight was very helpful to the discussion. No insults to others, just facts and relevant opinion. We can learn many things from the Swiss. But their "gun culture" will only make things worse for their country.

Occupy ReaLity...just to add to your comment from yesterday. And using the same source you likely used (USA Today): • 3% of Americans own 50% of the guns. "Super users" like the Vegas psycho are in this category. BUT it's important to note 22% of Americans own guns. Over 55 million people. Regarding the demographic of gun owners you mention. I think it's misleading unless given as a ratio to the population. For example, the article states : "25% of gun owners in America are white or multi-racial, compared with 16% of Hispanics and 14% of African Americans". Therefore, using the 55 million number, the number of guns owned in America by demographic: - 8.8 million Hispanics own guns (about 15% of their total population) - 7.7 million African Americans own guns (about 18% of their total population) - 13.75 million white/'multi-racial (about 6% of their total population) Leaving OVER 25 MILLION "other" citizens who own guns. Mind you, that could be how many guns Ted Nugent owns.... (To be clear, I'm not being racist with the demographic data. All humans are the same; we all evolved from shared ancestors from the continent now-known as Africa..over hundreds of thousands of years. "Race" can be better described as "Culture". Skin color, eye shape etc..is irrelevant in the big picture). Interestingly, the country with the next highest rate of gun-related deaths, Switzerland (mentioned a few times in this thread), has over 20-25% of citizens who own guns. While the US has 18% (55 million/323 million). Yet America has almost 4 times the gun violence.

Well said. I made the same basic point and scrolled down to see yours. It's mind boggling how unbalanced this segment was. It's propaganda intended to mislead and misinform. Oliver is better than this.

Not mentioning the thousands of successful deportations of criminals and/or those clearly abusing the system.
