Suggesting increased border security rather than an effective border barrier is exactly like suggesting we should leave our front doors unlocked and rely completely on the police to prevent theft. The Dem's are playing politics. Both Obama and Hillary wanted a border barrier. It's estimated illegal immigrants/amnesty costs America well over $50 billion per year. And that's an old 2013 estimate (link below). Not to mention drug and human trafficking. A border barrier won't eliminate all issues... but it sure as hell will reduce them significantly. Even if it only cuts the $50 billion in half, the wall more than pays for itself in the first year. @t

Or locks on his front door?

No No More importantly, what do you think is the best solution to prevent easy illegal immigration and drug trafficking across our border?

Maribell Espinoza Please read the final sentence of my comment again. I agree a border barrier won't solve all issues. But Obama and Hillary wanted it because it's cost effective and an excellent deterrent. And for $5 billion it'll pay for itself in the first year.

@claytonthechemist Good points. I'm curious if you have a cost benefit analysis of using technology rather than a border structure? (honest question). While I agree we need to enhance the use of technology on our border it should go hand in hand with a permanent barrier. For example, monitoring tunneling will be far easier. You wouldn't leave your front door open and rely completely on technology to protect your house... right?

@JeanJacket22 A patch of dirt is far less effective. And I assume you're aware of the existence of razor wire and other products?

@JeanJacket22 That's an interesting perspective. But do you have any statistics or data to support the claim the barrier wasn't effective in Texas? I agree 100% we have to look at the big picture with respect the visa system. As well, we need to speed up the processing of amnesty requests. Trump's stopped the 'catch and release', but far more needs to be done to deter ineligible immigrants. Lastly, I disagree a border barrier is a waste of money. It's incredibly cost effective compared to other solutions. I remind you of the tens of $billions spent because of our essentially open border (the vast majority) and such easy access. It'll be the best $5 billion the country has spent in a long time.

@JeanJacket22 Again, thank you for the interesting perspective. You're on the front line, so to speak. Putting aside the risk of 'paid off' border security, what do you think is the best approach to secure the border in your area?
