  1. Newsome ignored a 2016 Referendum on capital punishment. The majority voted to retain the death penalty. It was democracy at work. But Newsome and the lobby groups didn't like the result so they ignored it. The message to people in California is clear: Vote all you want but don't expect it to matter.
