When two lanes of traffic become one the most efficient approach is a zipper merge. This means the vehicles in the lane that continues should yield to vehicles from the lane that’s ending, one at a time alternating. Watching these videos it’s amazing how many drivers don’t seem to know about zipper merge etiquette.

@jpharleyd9325 …What you’re describing is what a zipper merge is supposed to be. The lane that ends should have vehicles lined up to the merge point. Then everyone alternates, with those in the lane that continues letting one vehicle in at a time. Again, it’s been proven this is the most efficient way to move traffic. People that don’t know about the zipper merge often get in one line far too early. Then they get upset and block….exactly what happened in the clip you referred to. The cammer was fine but the truck who didn’t let the tandem dump truck zipper was an idiot. Again, more people need to to learn about the beauty of the zipper merge! Spread the word!

@ballinbunnies …I’m not sure we’re talking about the same clip. The cammer who was merging on the freeway and thought the truck had to yield wasn’t in a zipper situation. The clip we’re referring to is the one with the dump truck trying to zipper from a lane that ends and an having an idiot blocking him.

@jpharleyd9325 .. We're essentially saying the same thing. The key is that you understand what a zipper merge is. And just for clarity, the speed at which one zipper merges is kinda irrelevant. Sometimes the lane that continues is flowing nicely and you can merge from the lane that's ending a ways back from the pinch point. But most of the time it's exactly what was shown in the clip...the line that continues is stop and go traffic. In that case, vehicles in the lane that ends should go right up to the pinch point and vehicles in the lane that continues let them in one at a time. Which is exactly what the dump truck did. Unfortunately, the idiot in the truck that tried to block him doesn't know what a zipper merge is. Every few Dashcam Lesson vids there's a zipper merge scenario. I've yet to see a single example of the cammer understanding the benefits of the zipper merge. They all stupidly say the people trying to merge from the lane that ends have done something wrong. There should be a national education campaign on the efficacy of the zipper merge. And I think it should be law so that idiots who block zipper mergers get a ticket.
