# 15 is another classic work-zone zipper merge scenario. And we have yet another cammer who doesn’t understand how they work.

Good job on 15. Many people don’t understand how zipper merges work, including the cammer apparently.

@1369Stiles The fact you're leaving gaps for people to get in front of you means you understand the principle of the zipper merge, which is a good thing. Now all you need to do is realize vehicles are doing the right thing by utilizing both lanes right up to the pinch point. Forming one long line causes needless congestion. How far back do you think people should form one line? 1 mile? 2 miles? That doesn't make sense. In stop/go traffic the most effective way to move traffic is for both lines to fill to the pinch point and then alternate. I agree it can sometimes be irritating when people don't merge further back (particularly when you're nice enough to create a gap) but that defeats the purpose of the zipper merge. I've seen countless comments on both sides of the zipper merge debate. Unfortunately too many people think forming one line is the best approach. It isn't, which is why there's been education campaigns in the benefits of the zipper and some states are making them law. You get a ticket if you don't let people get in front of you. Fortunately that wouldn't happen to you.

@1369Stiles If they wanted only one lane to be used there’d be only one lane open. Not using the empty lane is nonsensical and can cause traffic to back up into other intersections. That’s the congestion I’m referring to. If you want to be one of those people who forms one line go for it. No one’s forcing you to drive smart. Just don’t get upset when people drive correctly and utilize both lanes. They’re not “asshats”, they’re driving smart. You can try to argue in favour of one long line and you’ll fail every time, just like dozens of others in the comment sections for this channel. The lack of understanding is why many states do education campaigns. Zipper merging (especially in in work zone scenarios) is the most effective way to move traffic according to countless studies. It’s also safer because it slows traffic down a bit, as you noted. I think that’s what upsets you most, and it shouldn’t. Here’s a wild idea: one day why don’t you use the empty lane as it should be used instead of getting in one lane and getting angry at people? You’ll be setting and example for others on how to drive correctly. And if someone at the pinch point gets mad at you or doesn’t let you in just call them an asshat for not understanding how zipper merges work lol.

@1369Stiles And btw, I’ve driven longer than you have lol.

@1369Stiles Lol, read my first comment again. If you tried driving correctly and utilized the empty lane as it’s intended you’ll learn it’s not just theory.
