  1. Those defending McCallum based on 'freedom of speech' are missing the point. Government representatives are paid to use confidentiality, logic and integrity when speaking on behalf the country. McCallum's comments lacked all three. He used a personal opinion to seriously undermine the rule of law and the country's international legal obligations. His firing was the first smart move I've seen from Trudeau in a long, long time.
