It was after 14,000 Russian- Ukrainians in the eastern oblasts (Now independent republics in a federation with Russia) were killed, and after a huge amassing of Ukrainian troops at the Western border of Donbass, that the Russians finally gave up trying to establish peace ( 2 Minsk Accords) and went into the new breakaway republics to try to stop the slaughter. They had been appealed to for years for protection, but until that time had only sent in doctors, medicine and food.
