Wrote a great book, "Failure is Not an Option." Highly recommended.

The guys who get the nightmares are still paying the price for our freedom.

P.S. this guy's a great story teller. Thank you for your service and I hope your mom finally forgave you for flying.

This guy was so rugged and now so humble and straightforward. In the presentation, watch when he grins. Thank you so much for getting Ray Lambert's story on tape.
31
Forget the high school kids for the moment. How many Americans could pass a basic quiz on the sacrifices of those who came before?
26
@jjww30 I know there are democrats who are patriots, love the flag, and cry when they hear our anthem.
20
Go to 8:42 to see why these guys don't talk usually talk. Thank you, Mr. Spaulding for subjecting yourself to being interviewed in order to educate our generation.
12
Too bad God wasn't there for the others. How does that work?
12
Agreed. These guys open up when they get old. Because many times it's painful to talk about and they feel nobody really understands. Well, the latter is true.

Sharing beer with his buddies gets him in trouble. No good deed goes unpunished! A guy who can remember how the fishing was out of Long Beach on Dec. 6, 1941 is a rare catch indeed.
9
I don't like how James blames himself for the wounds of the second lieutenant artillery observer. He could have been killed later, especially with that desire to get combat experience.
8
I love this guy. I couldn't shoot him, either.
7
I remember seeing documentaries about the torpedo planes all being shot down but the dive bombers being successful, in part because Japanese interceptors were changing out armaments.

Thanks Lester. You faced inhuman cruelty and survived to tell about it. Glad you didn't hit that pile of stumps on the airfield under construction, that you you pulled out your drogue chute, only gave name, rank, and serial number, and surrendered your Red Cross packages.

When I was younger I was interested in bath escapes, too. Paratroopers in this series are sharp as tacks in their years. The best of the best America trained and sent into battle. The Germans called them "devils in baggy pants."
5
Glad King Neptune didn't drown Charles! What an upbeat, positive spirit. Would have liked to know his job after his service. I'm willing to bet he did a great job whatever it was.
4
These interviews need to be sold to the documentary makers. They are so good.

32:13 Crandall makes the point that exposing trainees to endure hardships is not the way to get the best people. Train in tough conditions, but not just to suffer. Teach them to scrounge. He would have bought chain saws and electric generators with his own money with what he learned.
4
As mentioned late in the interview, his story was the subject of an excellent documentary "Maggie's War." It was on Amazon Prime for awhile.
3
Watch Hacksaw Ridge to understand what this medic is talking about. There are no atheists in foxholes, and medics don't get foxholes, so what does that mean for these guys? Pure guts, that's what. Get a DNA sample from this guy for the future. Thoroughbred. Good interviewer. Get his DNA sample, too, with lower priority. No offense.
2
Thanks for these guys willing to talk on camera. Does anyone think it's easy?
2
Do NOT piss this guy off. They got his little brother and paid the price.
2
Fair enough though I'd put it a tad differently. NASA was in the right place, at the right time.
2
Speranza means "hope" in Italian. Salute!

About the flag on Mount Suribachi, "Three divisions put it up."

25:10 This guy is funny as hell.

This is the sort of cat being threatened by the COVID. Is he worth saving him or just let him die?
1
I don't understand why this great channel begins with LBJ and Dubya Bush.

These old guys wouldn't talk before. Now is the time to catch them. Talking causes pain for them but they're patriots and are willing to talk to be filmed. I know this because I filmed a veteran and his wife said that he's never talked this much about the war before now. You have to catch them.

The Americans were the way the Ukrainians are right now. They are fighting for their freedom.

Those sneaky recruiters. They tell you one thing but you end up where Uncle Sam sends you.
