  23.  @moabman6803  Usually the cost to retrieve it from the water is not worth it. Salt water does a lot of rust damage to metal. The thermal shock, of the hot engines hitting the water also likely causes cracks and deformation. Overall, it's just scrap metal, that would take a lot of energy to separate the alloys into useful raw materials again (more than just processing freshly mined raw ore.)

Steel already starts losing its strength above 200 C (400 F). That's far lower than the melting point of steel (around 1500 C). Any regular fire can compromise the steel beams, no need for jet fuel; just give it enough time, for the heat to propagate through the concrete.

It can still be cheaper to run destructive tests in another freshly built booster, than to recover the used one. Had SpaceX still been struggling with making their rockets fly, the salvage would be more valuable.
