  1. I speak mainly as a forklift mechanic but these are my observed main differences between German and Japanese engineering... Germans engineering - as complicated as it can be for the sake of it. Their engineering all seems to be ego driven, d@&k waving, 'look how clever we are' Japanese engineering - as complicated as it needs to be but no more. The Japanese are very good and keeping focus on the requirements of the thing they're building - not automatically over-engineering everything like its being sent to the moon.

  2. Yup, they've not had a full on smash like they would with a broken timing belt/chain. That cam phaser failure probably altered the cam timing just enough for the pistons to just tickle those exhaust valves.

  4.  @sebastianbrrrr7372  It's a crying shame, my only car is an '88 VW mk2 golf 16v. Its easy to work on, not overly complicated and build quality is excellent. Has 205K miles on the clock and runs like a champ, that was old school German engineering and it was excellent.

  5. As a forklift mechanic 60-70% of brakes I deal with are drum brakes. A lot of problems are due to mismatching after market parts - such as shoe linings of the incorrect thickness so they don't match the radii of the drum correctly or things like sef adjusting mechanisms not being assembled correctly. They have their advantages, a duo-servo type set up will have more braking power than equivalent diameter disk brake and can achieve greater performance without servo assistance than a disk due to the self servo action of the drum brake assembly. Shoes also last a lot longer than disk pads - I can can count on one hand how many sets of brake shoes I've changed because they've worn out, nearly always because of brake fluid or gear oil contamination. Disadvantages are obviously weight, complexity, poor wet weather performance and the big one, heat dissapation - a big deal on a road vehicle not a big deal on a forklift.

  6. Best just to let it go. I'm a forklift engineer in the UK and the problem with forklifts is they get expensive real quickly if they have been neglected. Absolutely no money in flipping old trucks anymore - there was 30 years ago when they cost a lot more new but sadly not anymore.

  11.  @timmayer8723  Yep, working on forklifts for a living I've definatly lost a few hundred on tools I've dropped and fallen into places in the chassis where their basically unretrievable without pulling the engine out 😂.

  12.  @bartdegroot4826  Lost a piece of a Cav injection pump in the snow once, Cat forklift, back street scrap yard in East London England, out in the road, pitch black, blowing a blizzard with about 12" snow on the ground - I spent an hour raking through slush, gone! That was a bad night 😔

  14. Wes Johnson no trust me, there isn't. Get involved with the big stuff and it's easy to end up tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket. The repair and parts cost become astronomical. The only people who make money from flipping old beat up forklifts are the scumbags who bodge em up to run, fresh coat of paint and sell the polished turds on ebay/auction as 'refurbished' and let the new owner discover the hidden horrors. It was a different story 20-30 years ago but sadly not the case anymore. You have to really know forklifts to make any money on them.

  15.  @billyhellboy6138  Sorry but crimping is generally preferable to soldering in automotive applications. Soldered joints tend to be brittle due to solder wicking up the cable at the joint, they break after a few years of vibration. If your having problems with crimps failing, your not crimping properly, usually because of a poor quality/incorrect crimp tool.

  16. Wes, that glove over the radiator cap header is one of best diagnostic tricks I've seen for years, blew my mind, even after 20 years as a forklift tech, never would have thought of it. Beats one of those finicky co2 colour change liquid test kits. Everydays a school day. The simplist ideas are always the best. Thanks man.

  20. Meh, not really, plenty of European cars are no worse to work to work on than your average Toyota Camry. I'm sure there are plenty of nightmare US cars as well. I've got a '88 VW golf - very easy car to work on.

  23. Its a weird set up they use on some forklift rams Wes. Ive just left a Nissan/Unicarrier dealer and their lift rams are displacement type with piston and gland seals but with no check valve in the bottom of the rod. They used to rip the gland seals out because they'd get dry - they never saw any oil. No idea why they design them that way. If it was a customer where the forklift always lived outside and they never used the full lift height gland seals would rip out every 18mth to 2 years. Used to pack the glands with grease when i reassembled them and that seemed to extend the life a bit longer.

  24. Not so much these days but a few years ago most of my work was completing the diagnosis work other engineers couldn't. Learnt quickly to completely disregard anything the guy before me had done - not even interested. All I ask for is the machine is completely reassembled like they were never there and as my old mentor used to say 'if your methodical, never skip a step and start from the beginning you'll find it every time'. Too many times I've walked in on an electric forklift with motor controllers, logic boards, motor/reduction units lying all over the place just to find its a dud battery cell, bad cell link or canbus plug not clipped in all the way.

  26. Biggest issue I've found so far is most the 12v vacuum pumps around are a rather 'toy like', it'd work but no good on the job if it takes 20-30mins to pull a vacuum. I'll keep searching... ;)

  27. Some times I've found when wiring is this bad it's cheaper and quicker to just cut it all out and start again. If an old vehicle and cost needs to be kept down I often use 7 core trailer cable as a cheap, dirty 'pre made' harness for rear light wiring. Nothing beats a proper individual wire carefully made harness but as Wes says its very time consuming. I find the trailer cable is a happy compromise, better than hacking away with spices atleast.

  29.  @danmackintosh6325  Don't get me wrong I totally agree, the traditional alternator internal voltage regulator handled the job just fine. The 'smart charge' bullshit was exactly that, just over engineering to create a revenue stream. My point is that it isn't just German auto manufacturers guilty of these practices.

Yup, I'm a forklift mechanic and the piles of junk get the hairs on the back of my neck standing up, because I know its coming - "You serviced my truck 6 weeks ago, now my spotlights don't work, its got to be something you done", "You serviced my truck 6 weeks ago, now its blowing smoke, got to be something you done " ect, ect blah, blah, blah. Drives ya nuts...

  34. Honestly, if you don't need a backhoe I'd politely tell the guy to stuff it. Just sell your loader and post lift - the pair are probably worth not far off what the backhoe is and you ain't got to do a load of work to get it. That MF just seems to be a basket case with the amount of work thats been done to it - what's next? Also you have no guarantees the rest of that transmission is OK until you get it back together. Do I remember a previous video when you said there was something severely worn in that backhoes hydraulic rotary actuator causing a load of play in it that when it breaks the parts aren't available?

  36. I goddam hate weird computer faults - nigh on impossible to prove 100% that the unit is at fault. Its more a case of proving everything else is OK and the computer is the only thing left, that's why the diagnosis takes forever.

  38. Wes, I don't think I've ever replaced a wiring harness in 20 years of fixing forklifts. Even other techs say "replace the harness" even though I'm the one who does the complex wiring repairs. Point being most people who say "just replace the harness" I don't think have ever actually fitted one, they don't realise it's not a component that can just be unbolted and changed like and engine part - it runs around every nook and cranny Most machines I've looked at I've estimated it'd take a good 3 days to fit due to the shear number of components that would needed to be removed just to route it correctly. That vintage of JCB you likely couldn't even get a new harness and if you could it'd be $4k+ easily. Another thing people forget, especially on old stuff is they've often had so many wiring modifications and repairs that if you put a new harness on you'd probably end up with a lot of things still not working and have to 'modify' the new harness anyway. I'm my humble experience, if a harness has got that bad that replacement is the only option then that's normally when a machine is at an age where its probably time to just call it a day and send it to China to be turned to patio furniture. There is exceptions of course, say a new machine that suffered a catastrophic short.

  39. The test liquid head gasket testers all test for co2 not co. Lot more co2 in your exhaust gases than co which is in tiny quantities.

Lighter pistons are just part of reducing the weight of the roatating/reciprocating assembly of the engine - you may make some very marginal hp games due to reduced parasitic losses but I'd lay money it'd barely be detectable on a dyno. A lighter rotating assembly will theoretically allow an engine to reach higher rpm without scattering rods and pistons so yeah: higher rpm = more power

  43. The joys of multilayer fault finding Wes, been there done that. Constantly finding problems but still not finding THE problem. When everything's wrong? All you can do is start from the beginning and keep plugging through until you get there. Takes a lot of skill, determination and at times bloody mindedness 😂 You've defiantly got the first two traits, only you know if you've got the third 😂. Great video as always man.

  45.  BreatheScotland  The fairest price is the hours you've spent - nothing more, nothing less. Especially the "3 other mechanics have had a stab at this" faults. No way you should low-ball yourself if your the guy who fixes it. I can guarantee you the other 3 unsuccessful mechanics got paid and they may well have knocked a few hours off and rightly so. If you want quality work you've gotta pay for it - people need to get their heads around that. Low balling the hours just sets an unrealistic price presidence that hurts all of us trying to make a living at this job. This pricing strategy had completely killed my industry (forklifts) over the last 2 decades.

  48. Bless the old girl, been cooked good and proper - not always viable to fix everything, takes just as much experience to know when to call it a day as it does to repair things properly. Had a similar scenario lately with a Nissan TD27 diesel in a Nissan forklift, cooked her so bad the head cracked between all 4 exhaust valves and the pre-combustion chamber's (through the water galley in between them). Also glazed the bores and she got so hot the head bolts and block deck had blued. Crazy thing is, although it wernt happy it still ran and the head gasket hadn't blown! Verdict? It was one of our old short term junker rental machines, billed the customer for the cost of a head replacement then took her straight to the scrap yard.

  50. ​ @ChrisHarding-lk3jj Tbh, I prefer same colour but numbered wiring looms - it's generally easier when you've got to piece a lot of them together. Problem with colours is they end up using the same colours multiple times for different things - great when you've got 3 green wires with a red stripe and now you have to work out where they terminate.
